Mayor Taylor envisioned a community of Tulsans enjoying the many parks and recreational areas of the greater Tulsa area while investing in their health by getting out and walking, running, biking, or swimming. With a plan to bring together people by forming new “groups”, the community would come together and track their miles to a goal of 1,000,000. The goal was reached! Over 150 groups have been formed and thousand of members have participated! The program will continue and continue to grow within the community.

At the same time, a goal was set to lose 1,000,000 pounds – as a community. Setting the 1,000,000 pound goal was secondary to the awareness campaign. Today, the community is marching steadily towards the 1,000,000 pound goal. As one of the first community-based programs, completely funded by private citizens and companies, the program has served as a model for other communities and continually shares the programs experiences with other community leaders.

Recognizing that healthy living is supported by forming habits that will last a lifetime, the web site promotes becoming “energized” about your daily life, habits, and getting healthy. Choosing nutritious foods and making exercise a daily activity are important, too. That’s where the Energize BG program comes in – helping members track their progress and providing the tools to support becoming more fit and healthy.
